AFTER TONSILLECTOMY SURGERY

Dear Parents, Patient Relatives & Dear Patients,

After removal of tonsils by surgical approach, you will have a very painful eating and drinking period for about 7 to 10 days after surgery. Apart from the sore throat, the pain can also be felt through the ears because of reflection effect. Another feature of this period is the possibility of bleeding from the tonsils at any time.

Paracetamol-containing drugs should be the first choice for children and adults for sore throat and painful swallowing. Novalgin drops can also be used for pain if that cannot be controlled with paracetamol.

BLEEDING RISK

Bleeding risk is higher during the first two days and on the 8th to 10th days. Because of this reason, we need to pay attention to the painkillers we use and our eating habits during these special days. Especially drugs that contain blood thinners should not be used during the first week.  ASPIRIN, which is often not even considered a medicine, is the most important of such agents. Again, especially during this period, drinking alcohol and smoking should be avoided. One time black-red bloody vomiting can be considered normal due to the blood swallowed during the surgery. If vomiting recurs or fresh blood comes from the mouth, you should definitely contact your doctor. The places of tonsil in the mouth will be seen as white in a few days, this appearance is not an infection. It is also normal to develop bad breath during these days. During early days after surgery, it will be sufficient to use only brush and water without using toothpaste for dental care.

FEEDING AFTER SURGERY

Eating habits of the patient should gradually change from cold, watery and grainless (mashed) foods to our normal eating habits. Especially in the first day after the surgery, it should definitely be avoided from hot foods and dry foods and acidic foods or drinks that may damage the surgical wound.

On the day of the operation, oral nutrition can be started 2-3 hours after the completion of the surgery. On this FIRST DAY, cold water and cold milk should be drunk as you get thirsty for nutrition, and colorless, grainless ice cream should be eaten when you get hungry.

On the SECOND DAY (the next day after the surgery), you can drink cold sherbet, compote, cold tea and ayran in addition to the foods that can be taken on the first day.

On the THIRD DAY, additional foods such as cream, pudding, yogurt can be added. Bread crumbs or biscuits soaked in aqueous foods can be eaten.

FOURTH DAY, grainless cold flour and yogurt soups can be drunk.

FIFTH DAY, foods such as mashed potatoes and warm soft boiled eggs can be added.

DAY SIX, lukewarm rice and well-boiled pasta can be eaten.

On the Seventh to Tenth DAYS, anything that is not too hot can be eaten except very hard and dry foods such as dry meatballs and toast.

There is no harm in starting normal nutrition after the tenth day.

MOUTH CARE

Bad odors can come in the mouth after tonsillectomy surgery. This is a feature related to the healing of wounds, and does not mean that oral care is insufficient. Salivation during this period is very useful for both pain control and oral care. For this reason, chewing gum should stimulate excessive salivation. It is not recommended to use toothpaste for the first 3 days for dental care. However, brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and water is also a sufficient method for oral and dental care.
